When installing a floating wood laminate floor, do you need to lay down the moisture resistant plastic as well as the foam sheets? I thought you did, but the guy that sold me the wood flooring insisted that the thick foam matting was all that was needed. Any advice would help. Thanks.

If you lay it on concrete, you must use the barrier
If you lay it on subfloor the foam is enough
If install is in a basement, i suggest it, otherwise in a dry area where moisture will not seep under it, probably no need to.
Make sure you read all instructions on caring for that laminate flooring. You cannot let a spill sit on it, it will cause a "lip". You cannot wet mop, damp slightly, but not wet. I suggest a swiffer wet jet. use the jet part minimally.
If you do not have a basement and the install is in a mobile home or area where it is crawl space, I would suggest moisture barrier.

In all regards to going the distance….the moisture barrier under the foam just gives longevity, and protection to the money you spend on the laminate flooring and the time to install it. If money is no object….and you want to replace it in 2-5 years don’t bother. This barrier is an insurance against possible unforseen futrue damage.
normally the plastic is laid down first just as a precaution on concrete floors so that any moisture coming through wouldn’t damage the floor. The foam stuff which is usually blue actually does the same thing. You should be fine. If you choose to go ahead and put plastic down make sure your seams overlap and that the seams from the blue foam are not in same areas as the plastic seams
